Alderney Representatives

Alderney has two seats with voting rights on the States of Guernsey monthly Deliberation meetings with the aim of representing Alderney taxpayers in Guernsey decisions. Alderney's representatives in the States of Guernsey ensure that the island's voice is heard in these decisions, which can significantly impact Alderney residents.

They are full members of the Guernsey Assembly and are eligible to sit on its Committees if elected by that Assembly. As the Bailiwick Parliament, the States of Guernsey Assembly makes some decisions for all the Islands of the Bailiwick. For example, Criminal law is dealt with at Bailiwick level. In many instances the Alderney representatives must balance their task of representing Alderney’s interests with their responsibility to the Bailiwick as a whole.

How an Alderney Representative is Selected

The plebiscite is a biannual vote taken by the Electorate which provides a preference as to which two Members of the States it feels should represent Alderney in Guernsey's States of Deliberation. An additional element of this process is that; the appointments are then confirmed annually, each January, by the States of Alderney to confirm the positions. The States of Alderney also elects two other Members as Alternative Representatives.

Remuneration

The two Members representing Alderney in the States of Guernsey each receive an additional £15,745 per year. If they hold a seat on a Committee this increases to £26,611. If an Alderney Representative becomes President of a Principal Committee (SOG) they receive £35,958, and if they become President of Policy and Resources Committee, £55,595.
