The States of Alderney or the Government of Alderney, is the parliament and government of the British Crown dependency of Alderney.

States of Alderney

There are no political parties in Alderney. Government is carried out by the States of Alderney (the legislature) which consists of a President and 10 States Members. The President presides over the meetings of the States.

The monthly States Assembly Meeting debates legislation, broad policies and priorities, items of significant expenditure, and matters of major public interest. If you wish to see what the States has been debating this political term, you can access the Billets d'États for the States' Meetings here.

Executive Functions

The executive functions of the States are carried out using a committee system. Each Committee is made up of a number of Members, between three and ten, who are appointed to the various Committees by the States Members shortly after the Election. Membership of each Committee is determined at the first meeting of the States each year.

The Committee structure consists of four Principal Committees and several other sub Committees, which are sometimes referred to as working groups, or boards. The names and responsibilities of which are provided on the final page of this section.

In practice, most day-to-day functions of the States are carried out by these Committees, each of which is independently responsible to the States of Alderney. The Committees of the States are, in effect, agents of the States of Alderney exercising functions conferred on them by resolution of, or legislation approved by, the States Assembly.
